Eco Fees
BREAKING NEWS - ECO FEES ELIMINATED
At a press conference on Tuesday July 20, Ontario Minister of the Environment John Gerretsen announced that government is ending eco fees on the consumer products designated under phase two of Orange Drop or the Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (MHSW) Program.
What does this mean for you?
Effective today, you will not be required to pay an eco fee on any of the potentially thousands of products that fall into one of the 13 material categories added to Orange Drop on July 1, 2010. Retailers may, however, charge you eco fees on any of the nine materials introduced when the program was launched in July 2008. These are:
· Household paints and coatings and their containers
· Solvents, such as thinners for paint, lacquer and contact cement, paint strippers and degreasers, and their containers
· Used oil filters
· Oil containers of 30 litres or less
· Single-use, dry cell batteries
· Automotive antifreeze (engine coolant) and related containers
· Pressured containers, such as propane tanks and cylinders
· Fertilizers and their containers
· Pesticides, including fungicides, herbicides and insecticides, and their containers
What about the eco fee I was charged on tires or a new TV?
Only the eco fees associated with phase two of the Orange Drop or MHSW Program have been cancelled. Ontario Electronic Stewardship sets fees for electrical and electronic equipment, while Ontario Tire Stewardship levies fees on tires. These programs are completely outside our jurisdiction.

Why am I charged an environmental handling fee?
Environmental Handling Fees Until March 31 2010.
Your Gibbys Audio Video.com purchase may include an environmental handling fee as required by the Ontario Government. Used to support provincial recycling and disposal programs, environmental handling fees are collected on products such as metal, glasses, and plastics that can be recycled into other products. Handling Fees are also collected on products that may contain substances that are hazardous to the environment.
We charge environmental handling fees on items that are shipped to, delivered to or picked up in provinces or territories where we are required to do so. The handling fee amount reflects the applicable rate. You'll see the handling fee amount during the checkout process. The current Environmental Handling Fee is $10.07 per television set purchased as of April 1 2009. 100% of this levy goes towards the costs associated with the recycling of electronic waste.
April 1 2010 there are new fees to be collected as set out by the Ontario Government. These new fees will be listed on our site by April 1 2010 as they apply. Please follow the link for full details click here.
Returns
If you return an item for which you were charged an environment handling fee, the amount of the handling fee will be refunded. Please refer to your packing slip or our return policy for more details on returning items.
